In wake of the recent devastation from the Moore, Okla. twister, pet company donates 300 natural flea and tick treatments to Animal Rescue Center

(Austin, Texas) – Wondercide LLC, a producer of organic pest control and natural products for pets, people, and property has donated their EVOLV flea and tick control to help 300 four-legged victims of Monday’s destructive twister in Moore, Okla.

The Oklahoma pet rescue donation was made to the Animal Resource Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., which is serving as the only temporary shelter for lost and harmed animals affected by the twister. Given the volume of animals arriving at the shelter, flea and tick control products as well as other pet care products are in high demand. EVOLV will provide the rescued pets a natural, non-toxic flea and tick solution that can be administered topically to help prevent the spreading of fleas and ticks.

“When tragic events like Monday’s twister occur, the devastation is felt by everyone in the family, including our pets,” said Wondercide CEO Stephanie Boone. “We at Wondercide send our deepest condolences and appreciation for those assisting in the rescuing and rehabilitating of Moore.”

Wondercide’s senior developer, Jason Diehl, as a Norman, OK resident, has witnessed first hand the devastation in Moore. Upon hearing the news of the twister hitting Briarwood Elementary, he left his house in the storm to assist with rescuing those trapped in the twister’s aftermath.

If you’re an outdoor entusiast or pet owner, you’ve probably noticed the large amount of ticks this year. But what you may not have realized is that Ticks carry Lyme disease which is a health hazard to you, your family, and your pets.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected deer tick. Untreated, the disease can cause a number of health problems. Lyme disease rates have significantly increased in the northern states between 1992 and 2007 due to the increased population of ticks.

But Why Is The Tick Population Rising?

While we can’t say definitively, there are a number of contributing factors including:

Climate Change: With warming temperatures and more unpredictable weather (especially in the northern states) ticks are showing up in places that were once thought to be too cold for them to survive. Typically, cold nights that are under 40 degrees would kill them off, but with that happening less frequently, ticks are surviving and multiplying.

Changes in Bird Flight Patterns: The change in weather also has other affects that are causing increased tick populations, such as birds flying to new areas that are now deemed warmed enough for them to travel to and live. Ticks will attach to birds and travel through the air for long distances, bringing them to new places. It’s like a vacation for them, but not a vacation for those who have to deal with them!

Increased Deer Population: Deer are a popular host for ticks, so it only makes sense that the more deer that are around the more ticks will be around as well because they have plenty of hosts to feed on.

More Suburbs: New neighborhoods are popping up everywhere, and reaching further and further out into the wilderness. All this construction is causing confusion amongst the wildlife, as they begin to appear in the neighborhoods they once called home. This wildlife will have ticks on them, bringing them around the homes. Ticks aren’t picky when choosing a host, so if they’re around you and your dog they have no problem latching on for a meal.

What You Can Do To Protect Yourself From Ticks & Lyme Disease

The following safety measures can be easily incorporated into your lifestyle and will help you avoid getting ticks on you, on your pets, or in your home:

Wear Light-Colored Clothes: That way you can see the ticks crawling on you before they reach the skin

Wear Long Pants with Sneakers or Hiking Boots: We know it’s hot out, but tucking your pant legs into your socks and your shirt tucked into your pants can help keep ticks out. If you want to go a step further, duck tape around your ankles over your socks. You won’t win any fashion shows, but you will be tick free! Win some, lose some, I suppose.

Spray your clothes and any exposed skin with DEET free insect repellent: Stop the ticks before they bite! Biter Fighter Natural Insect Repellent allows you to repels ticks and mosquitoes without soaking yourself in toxic chemicals.

If you suspect there are ticks on your clothes, place them in the dryer on high heat: Ticks can survive the washing machine, even with hot water, but that can’t tolerate the dry heat of a dryer.

Spray your yard with a natural tick treatment: You should use an all-natural alternative to pesticides that will kill the ticks instantly and repel them from coming into your house in the first place.

Check for ticks daily: Check for ticks every day, especially if you’ve just been outside so they don’t drop off and wander around your home.

This weekend in Temple, Texas hundreds will gather to participate in the 5th Annual Battle of Temple Junction Civil War Reenactment.

With temperatures nearing 100 degrees, attendees will not just be fighting each other but will also battle millions of mosquitos. And with the continued concern over contracting West Nile Virus from mosquito bites, the Temple Parks and Wildlife Department reached out to Wondercide for some relief and protection for their event participants.

Wondercide generously donated 300 bottles of their Biter Fighter natural insect repellent to the event. What makes Wondercide’s Biter Fighter natural mosquito repellant spray so unique and effective is that it’s all natural, and 100% organic.

When asked about the donation, Temple native and Wondercide CEO Stephanie Boone said “I’m still amazed when I see people spraying themselves and their family with mosquito repellant that contains harmful chemicals like DEET. Our mission is help people understand that there is an effective alternative available to them. And just like these Civil War re-enactors, we’re gonna win it one battle at a time.”

The 5th Annual Battle of Temple Junction is a fictitious battle with the purpose of the event being to illustrate how a typical battle was fought and how Union and Confederate troops lived and trained during the war. Reenactors will use either period or reproduction weapons, uniforms, and gear.

With blizzards one day and sunshine the next, tick season is more unpredictable than ever, making treating and preventing ticks especially difficult.

The changing climate has seen lyme disease rates significantly increase in the northern states between 1992 and 2007, according to studies. Ticks as small as the head of a pin are causing this disease by transferring bacteria through biting your pet. Warming temperatures in these states are making it possible for the disease carrying Ixodes tick to migrate north and thrive. Although there have been more colder days than years before, it is still not considered a “hard winter,” so states previously thought to be too cold for ticks are seeing them more and more.

American Veterinary Medical Association says dog’s are 50% more likely to contract lyme disease than humans, and while they can’t transfer the tick disease to humans directly leaving ticks around with vulnerable hosts can cause a number of issues, most going undetected as other common diseases.

If left untreated lyme disease will shut down the kidneys and heart, killing the dog.

For dogs, typical symptoms are joint soreness, lameness, fever, and loss of appetite. While for humans, the symptoms will mimic the flu by causing fatigue, chills and fever, headaches, joint and muscle paint, swollen lymph nodes. A clear indicator of lyme disease will be if a circular, red skin rash will appear.

Where are these ticks coming from?

They’re in your own yard! They love high humidity and shaded moisture places, and that means inside your bushes and established root systems. When they’re ready for a meal, some ticks will find the best place to find a host by detecting color, movement and carbon dioxide from animals.they’ll attach themselves to a blade of grass with their clawed limbs outward, waiting for you to brush by so they can attach. Ticks cannot jump or drop down on you, but being so small they can be hard to avoid.

What You Can Do

We recommend using natural pest control products in your environment to prevent ticks from coming around you and your pet. The best products on the market are from Wondercide, offering the 3-step solution for protecting your pets, you, and your property.
