Growganics Edible Landscapes

BRINGING HOME LOCAL

Practically no one lives on a farm anymore. We all do our best to find fresh, safe food in the organic isles of the grocery store, but it is not the same as growing your own.

It has never been easier to create a beautiful, organic garden in your own yard. Growganics can make your dreams of organic gardens come true. Let us lead the way into a new way of eating locally.

WHY A HOME GARDEN?

In a world increasingly seeking answers to global issues of pollution, global warming, and social responsibility, a movement is growing toward eating more locally.

An edible landscape helps to make your outdoor space productive. It brings organic produce to your doorstep, and gives you an opportunity to be a part of the process of growing food.

Heirloom varieties of vegetables are selected for outstanding flavor and hardiness, and no one who has tasted a fresh heirloom veggie would disagree: food grown at home simply tastes better.

DID YOU KNOW?…..

• Residential lawns take up 23 million acres of land in the U.S.

• Americans spend $30 billion per year for lawn care.

• 270 billion gallons of water a week are used to water U.S. lawns. That’s enough to water 81 million acres of organic vegetables for a summer!

• $5.25 billion per year is spent on fossil fuel derived fertilizers for lawn care—much this ends up as pollution in our surface and groundwater. Switching to organic fertilizer and compost would eliminate a good part of this pollution.

• 80 million gallons of gasoline are used to mow lawns each year. A percent of this creates air pollution due to evaporation and pollutes groundwater due to spillage.

• Running a gas-powered lawn mower for an hour produces pollution equivalent to driving a car for 20 miles.

• $700 million is spent every year on 67 million pounds of synthetic pesticides are used in the upkeep of U.S. lawns each year, the majority polluting our surface and groundwater.

• Still need convincing? The average lawn in the U.S. is approximately 1/3 of an acre. That’s enough space to keep a family of 6 in organic vegetables year round and still have a small patch of grass! So next time you have the urge to plant something, make it edible!

WHO WE ARE

Missy and Francesca met while volunteering at the American Botanical Council, where they double dug a garden bed together. It was clear that they were meant to garden together, and so Growganics was born.

Francesca was raised by an herbalist, and has always known that plants are important to humans. She has been digging in the dirt and planting things for as long as she can remember, and holds a degree in Landscape Architecture. Her own gardens have been a source of constant delight and inspiration, and have helped her to realize that sustainability begins at home. †Missy cultivated her love of nature and interest in human’s interaction with the Earth teaching middle school science in public schools for 20 years.

In recent years, Missy helped customers at Whole Foods Market to expand their culinary horizons and worked on the Global Marketing Team to spread the good word of natural and organic products.

Using her own yard as a giant laboratory, she has experimented over the years with various techniques for coaxing things to flourish and to provide food and beauty.

WHAT WE DO

Growganics will come to your home and conduct a thorough analysis of your yard in order to determine where the ideal growing area is. Through a process of hands-on consultation, we will determine what size, shape, and style of raised bed garden is right for you and your family.

We will install your garden bed, bringing in high-grade, organic soil, compost and a variety of heirloom starts that you will have pre-selected.

No garden will be installed without a drip-irrigation system on a timer. This, and the weekly maintenance provided by our gardeners make your garden practically foolproof.

Seasonal rotation of crops and organic pest management are included in our service, and we are happy to involve you in all of our maintenance activities.

Whether you want a hassle-free organic landscape, or a backyard learning experience, Growganics can help you achieve the garden you desire.
