Dog Dental Care – Natural is Better

You’ve made the decision to go all natural... great! Dogs live, breathe, eat, and play naturally; it only makes sense that his health care is natural as well.

When was the last time you brushed your teeth? If you didn’t think “this morning” you might consider re-evaluating your own health habits.

Now, when was the last time you brushed your dog’s teeth? If you’re anything like me then this might be a difficult question to answer. Just the thought of shoving a foreign object into my dog’s mouth against her will is enough to make me cringe. Between her struggling, sweating, and shedding and my inner panic and guilt, I’m really not sure who is worse off after the process.

So, let’s talk about dog dental care.

According to Pet Product News International, 70 to 80 percent of dogs acquire some form of periodontal disease by the age of three. If your dog is older than that (like mine is), remember that it’s never too late to begin a proper dental care routine that is natural and easy.

There are many dog dental care products available and it can sometimes be overwhelming to know which are the best. You’ve probably seen everything from nyla bones, to edible dental chews and treats, and even antlers (deer and elk). Antlers make a great natural choice that dogs love! They are a great source of calcium and last much longer than raw hides and other bones.

Here are a few things to look for when choosing any bone or antler chew:

  • No other animals should be harmed in the making or collection of the products
  • They should contain no artificial color, or added hormones, antibiotics, animal by-products, steroids, or preservatives.
  • They should not chip or splinter when they are being chewed.
  • They should aid in cleaning and strengthening teeth, prevent tartar build-up.
